What Students Need to Do
- Students identify ways people change land and water, such as building dams, roads, farms, and cities. They explain benefits and harms using clear cause-and-effect links.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a map, image, or short source, students can name the change and explain at least one positive and one negative result. They can compare short-term benefits with long-term costs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label every change as completely good or completely bad. They may confuse natural events with human actions or overlook effects on people living downstream or nearby.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A town drains a wetland to build homes. Write one benefit, one negative consequence, and a sentence explaining each connection.
