What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort areas of the United States into regions using maps and geographic evidence. They describe each region using its land, usual weather patterns, and plant life.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify a region from maps, photos, or data and support their choice with several physical features. They can compare two regions and explain how their features differ.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse climate with daily weather or include cities and population as physical features. They may think regional boundaries are exact or that every place within a region looks the same.
How to Assess It
- Give students an outline map, climate data, and two landscape photos. Ask them to name the likely region and cite three physical clues.
