What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify political regions, such as states or counties, and economic regions shaped by farming, manufacturing, technology, or trade. They use map evidence to explain how people created each region.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly classify examples as political or economic regions. They explain that political regions have government boundaries, while economic regions may cross state lines and change over time.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse physical regions, such as the Great Plains, with economic regions. They may assume economic regions follow state lines or that each place belongs to only one region.

How to Assess It

Give students a U.S. map with state borders and industry symbols. Ask: "Name one political region and one economic region, then cite one map detail supporting each choice."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Overlay tracing paper on political and industry maps, then outline one political region and one economic region in different colors.

  2. Discuss or write: Why can the Corn Belt cross state lines while a state cannot?

  3. Play Region Sort by placing state, county, farming, manufacturing, and technology cards under political or economic headings.

  4. Check labels on five classroom products, map where they were made, and describe any economic pattern that appears.
