What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a clear claim about a social studies question. They select relevant facts from sources and explain how those facts support the claim in a presentation, visual, or written response.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a focused claim, uses accurate evidence, and connects each fact to the claim. The student organizes the response so an audience can follow the reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state a topic or personal opinion instead of an arguable claim. They may list facts without explaining the connection, use unrelated evidence, or treat every source as equally reliable.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Was the Boston Tea Party an effective protest? State one claim, give two facts from today’s sources, and explain each connection.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs claim and evidence cards about the American Revolution, then have them build a poster linking the strongest evidence to one claim.
Ask students to write and discuss which cause of the American Revolution mattered most, using two facts from class sources.
Play Evidence Match, where teams match source facts to claims and earn a point only after explaining each connection.
Have students survey classmates about a school issue, graph the results, and present a claim supported by the graph.
