Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students take a clear position on a social studies question. They select relevant facts from maps, images, texts, or data and explain their thinking through speaking, writing, or visuals.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student gives a focused answer and supports it with at least two accurate details. The student explains how each detail supports the answer and presents the ideas clearly.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give an opinion without facts or list facts that do not support their position. They may copy evidence without explaining its connection or use visuals as decoration only.
How to Assess It: Give students a map and short paragraph about a Texas settlement. Ask, “Which feature most influenced where this settlement grew? Give two supporting details.”

Lesson moves

Give groups claim and evidence cards to sort, then have them build a mini-poster using the strongest two pieces of evidence.
Ask students to write: “Which event caused the greatest change in our current unit, and what facts support your answer?”
Play Claim Match by having students pair evidence cards with the claim each one supports, then explain each match to a partner.
Students propose one school improvement and support it with survey results, observations, or a simple map of the campus.
