What Students Need to Do: Students make a clear statement that answers a social studies question. They select facts from maps, images, short texts, or other sources and explain how those facts support the statement.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student gives a focused claim and uses at least two relevant details as evidence. The student presents the reasoning clearly in a paragraph, brief talk, or labeled visual.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give a personal opinion instead of a claim that can be supported with facts. They may list unrelated details or repeat the claim as evidence.
How to Assess It: Give students a short passage and map about why a town formed near a river. Ask them to write one claim and two supporting facts.

Lesson moves

Give pairs source cards about a Texas community, then have them sort evidence and build a claim poster with two supporting details.
Ask, “Which community leader made the biggest difference?” Students state a claim, cite one class source, and explain the connection.
Play Evidence Match: teams pair claim cards with fact cards, then defend or reject each match in one sentence.
Compare two possible park locations using a neighborhood map, then present a recommendation supported by map evidence.
