What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a clear claim about a social studies topic. They support it with relevant evidence and explain how that evidence proves the claim.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select accurate facts from sources and leave out unrelated details. They present a logical explanation through a visual, oral presentation, or written response.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state an opinion instead of a claim that can be supported. They may list facts without explaining the connection, or use evidence that does not address the claim.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sources about the growth of an ancient city. Ask them to write one claim, cite two facts, and explain each fact's connection.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups source cards about an ancient city, then have them sort each card under supports, contradicts, or irrelevant.
Students respond to this prompt: Geography was the main reason this civilization grew, using two facts and a reasoning sentence.
Play Claim-Evidence Match by having teams pair claim cards with evidence cards and defend each match aloud.
Use a local news article and map to build a claim about how geography affects transportation, jobs, or settlement patterns.
