What Students Need to Do: Students explain how people moving into and within the United States changed the workforce, businesses, production, and markets. They use evidence to connect population movement with economic growth or challenges.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can describe a specific migration and identify at least two economic effects. They support each effect with evidence and explain the cause-and-effect link.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat immigration and migration as the same movement or assume all movement came from other countries. They may claim population growth always improves the economy without considering job competition, housing needs, wages, or public services.
How to Assess It: Give students one migration example and ask: “How did this movement affect workers, businesses, or markets? Use two details as evidence.”

Lesson moves

Place worker, business, housing, and product cards on a map, then model how population movement changes a town’s economy.
Write a claim answering: “Does migration always help an economy grow?” Support it with two examples from class sources.
Play cause-and-effect matching with migration event cards and economic effect cards, then require students to explain each match.
Examine local census and business data, then identify how population changes may have affected jobs, stores, housing, or services.
