What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect Bradford, Hutchinson, Penn, Smith, and Williams to the colonies where they worked or settled. They describe one major accomplishment for each person. They explain how each person’s actions related to religious freedom, economic opportunity, or both.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match each person to the correct colony and motive. The student explains that Smith helped Jamestown survive, Bradford governed Plymouth, and Hutchinson challenged Puritan authority and helped settle Portsmouth. The student also explains how Penn and Williams built colonies known for greater religious tolerance.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place all five people in one colony or assume they shared the same goal. They often confuse John Smith with John Rolfe and credit Smith with introducing tobacco. Some view Hutchinson only as a rule breaker, missing her challenge to religious authority and role in settling Portsmouth.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Complete five rows labeled Bradford, Hutchinson, Penn, Smith, and Williams with each person’s colony, motive, and one accomplishment. Circle one accomplishment connected to religious freedom.
