What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place major Spanish, French, and English exploration and settlement efforts on a timeline and map. They explain motives such as trade, land, wealth, and the desire to worship freely.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly connect a group with a time period, region, and reason for coming. They compare motives using examples such as Jamestown, Plymouth, Spanish missions, and French trading posts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every group came for the same reason or that all colonies were founded for religious purposes. They may confuse exploration with permanent settlement or overlook Indigenous peoples already living on the land.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map and ask them to locate Jamestown and Plymouth. For each, they write when it began and one main motive.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs date, group, place, and motive cards to match, then place each set on a classroom map and timeline.
Ask students to write: How were the reasons for founding Jamestown and Plymouth alike and different?
Play a clue game where students identify the explorer, colony, or settlement from clues about time, place, and motive.
Have students research why their town or a nearby community was settled, then compare that reason with an early colonial settlement.
