What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students match Gail Borden, Joseph Glidden, Michael DeBakey, and Millie Hughes-Fulford with their work. They explain how Texas innovations help people, businesses, and communities.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student correctly identifies each person’s contribution and places innovations into fields such as agriculture, medicine, energy, or aerospace. The student explains a clear benefit with evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse Gail Borden’s condensed milk with refrigeration or Joseph Glidden’s barbed wire with wooden fencing. They may name an invention without explaining who benefited or how. Some treat aerospace and aviation as identical.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one listed inventor or scientist, name the contribution, and explain one way it benefited people or businesses in Texas.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups name, picture, contribution, and benefit cards to sort into four matched sets, then check each set with a reference sheet.

  2. Write four sentences explaining how one Texas innovation changed daily life, work, health, transportation, or business.

  3. Play a matching relay where teams pair innovators with contributions, then earn a point by naming one Texas benefit.

  4. Read a short article about a Texas hospital, farm, energy company, or space center, then highlight the technology and its beneficiaries.
