What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name reliable ways to compare candidates, such as reading voter guides and checking official election websites. They can explain how one informed vote can affect community decisions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think voting is required by law or that children can vote in official elections. They may also confuse campaign advertisements with neutral information or believe local elections have little effect.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “Maria plans to vote for mayor. Name two things she should do before voting and explain why each matters.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up a mock city election with candidate cards, issue summaries, voter registration slips, private booths, and paper ballots.
Ask students to write: “What should a responsible voter learn before choosing a candidate, and where could that information be found?”

Examine a sample local ballot and identify which offices and proposals could affect schools, roads, parks, or public safety.
