What Students Need to Do: Students place events in chronological order and show them on a labeled line. They read dates and event labels to explain what happened before, after, or between events.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students build an accurate timeline with a title, dates, labels, and events in the correct order. They use it to answer questions about sequence and time between events.
Common Misconceptions: Students may place the most recent event first or confuse earlier dates with later dates. They may space unequal time periods evenly or leave out dates and labels.
How to Assess It: Give students four dated events and ask them to draw a timeline. Then ask, “Which event happened second, and what happened immediately before it?”

Lesson moves

Have students attach dated event cards to a classroom clothesline, then adjust the spacing to represent equal time intervals.
Ask students to write three sentences explaining what happened before, after, and between selected events on a class timeline.
Play Timeline Race by having teams arrange shuffled event cards in order and defend one placement using the dates.
Students create a timeline of six school-year events, including the first day, holidays, a field trip, and the last day.
