What Students Need to Do
- Students connect Pierre-Charles L'Enfant, Benjamin Banneker, and Benjamin Franklin to specific community contributions. They explain how city planning, surveying, and public services affected daily life.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify each person from a short clue or image. They accurately explain one contribution and how it helped a community grow or work better.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Banneker designed Washington, D.C., rather than helping survey its boundaries. They may think L'Enfant built the city himself or that Franklin only invented things. Franklin was not a president.
How to Assess It
- Give students three contribution cards and ask them to match each card to a person. Then have them explain one match in a complete sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a blank town map, string, and sticky notes to plan roads and public spaces, then compare choices with L'Enfant's plan.
Ask students to write which person's contribution most affected community life and support their choice with one fact.
Play a clue-card game where teams name the person and earn a second point by explaining the community impact.
Study a local map and identify roads, boundaries, or public services connected to the kinds of work these individuals completed.
