What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the natural material used to make an everyday item. They order the steps that change the material and explain what happens at each step.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can trace a familiar item, such as bread or a cotton shirt, back to its natural source. The student can place pictures in order and describe each change clearly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a store or factory as the original source. They may confuse a natural resource with a finished item. They may skip processing steps or place them in the wrong order.
How to Assess It
- Give students four picture cards showing wheat, flour, dough, and bread. Ask them to number the cards and write one sentence explaining how the resource changes.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sequence picture cards from cotton plant to T-shirt, then connect the cards with yarn and label each change.
Ask, “How does a tree become a pencil?” and have students write or discuss at least three ordered steps.
Play Product Chain Relay: teams match resource, process, and finished-product cards, then explain each completed chain.
Inspect a wooden ruler, identify wood as its natural material, and sketch how a tree becomes the ruler.
