What Students Need to Do: Students identify major innovations and explain how each changed production speed, cost, scale, or labor. They connect those changes to the movement of goods within the country and overseas.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can use a map, image, or short source to build an accurate cause and effect chain. They distinguish manufacturing changes from distribution changes and explain how the two affected each other.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every invention affected factories and transportation in the same way. They may claim the telegraph carried goods, or assume new technology benefited every region and worker equally.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose the steam engine or railroad and draw two cause and effect arrows, one for production and one for domestic or overseas trade.

Lesson moves

Give groups route cards, product cards, and cost tokens to compare shipping goods before and after canals and railroads.
Ask students to write which mattered more to national trade, faster production or faster transportation, using two specific examples.
Students match innovation cards with effect cards, then challenge one incorrect match made by another team.
Compare nineteenth century rail shipping with modern container shipping, tracking one product from factory to an overseas customer.
