What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how inventions and transportation projects changed production, trade, jobs, and markets. They use evidence to explain a chain from innovation to increased economic activity.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect mechanized factory production to lower costs, greater output, and wage labor. The student can explain how the railroad reduced shipping time, linked markets, and encouraged business growth using specific evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat an invention as economic growth itself without explaining the steps between cause and effect. They may assume benefits were equal or overlook worker exploitation, displacement, government support, and regional differences.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose the factory system or the Transcontinental Railroad and complete a four-link chain: innovation, immediate change, business effect, economic growth. Cite one supporting fact.
