What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify hardships, chances for work or land, and lasting actions of specific Native nations and immigrant communities. They explain how settlement and railroad construction brought different results for each group.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can tie a challenge, opportunity, and contribution to a named group and event. The student can compare two groups and support each claim with a map, image, quotation, or fact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the West as empty land waiting for settlers. They may credit railroad owners alone, overlook Chinese and Irish labor, or treat all Native nations as one group. They may also assume every group had equal choices and benefits.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Use two groups studied today to give one challenge, one opportunity, and one contribution connected to settlement or railroad building. Cite one map or source detail.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a railroad map and event cards about Chinese workers, Irish workers, Lakota people, and Cheyenne people; students place and annotate them.
Read short accounts from a Chinese railroad worker and a Lakota leader, then discuss who gained, who lost, and what evidence shows it.
Play Challenge, Opportunity, or Contribution: teams classify evidence cards, then earn a point only when they justify the label with a detail.
Open an online map and marker for the nearest historic rail line; students identify whose land, labor, or businesses shaped the route.
