What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name familiar celebrations and landmarks and tell why people remember, visit, or protect them. They sort examples as community, Texas, or national and connect each to a person, event, idea, or public purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify examples from names or photos and place them at the correct community, state, or national level. They explain each example with accurate details, including the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every celebration as just a day off or confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. They may call any popular place a landmark or think government buildings are important only because people work there.

How to Assess It

Give students one celebration card and one landmark photo. Ask them to label each as community, state, or national and write one sentence explaining why it matters.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort photo cards of celebrations and landmarks under Community, Texas, or Nation, then add sticky notes explaining why each matters.

  2. Ask, "How are Veterans Day and Memorial Day different?" Have partners discuss, then write one accurate sentence about each.

  3. Play a memory game matching each celebration or landmark card with its event, person, idea, or public purpose.

  4. Study a photo of your city hall or county courthouse, then list clues showing how the building serves the community.
