What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name Sam Houston, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. They connect each person to a major action or achievement. They also tell how two figures were alike and different.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match each figure to an accurate contribution using pictures, names, or short clues. The student can compare two figures by naming one similarity and one difference.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think all four figures were United States presidents or lived at the same time. They may confuse Washington with Lincoln. They may also believe one person caused major historical changes alone.

How to Assess It

Give students four name cards and four contribution cards to match. Then have them choose two figures and write or draw one similarity and one difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs portrait, date, and contribution cards, then have them build a four-person floor timeline and explain each match.

  2. Ask students to draw and label one way Washington and Lincoln were alike and one way they were different.

  3. Play a clue game where students hold up the correct figure card after hearing a contribution, event, or leadership clue.

  4. Show photos of local streets, schools, or monuments named for these figures, then discuss what each name helps the community remember.
