What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify key facts about two people from the past, including where they lived, what they did, and problems they faced. They explain one similarity and one difference using evidence from pictures, read-alouds, or short biographies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sort accurate details under each person’s name and place shared details in the middle of a Venn diagram. The student can explain how each person’s actions affected Texas or the United States.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare only clothing, appearance, or birth dates instead of actions and experiences. They may also mix up facts or assume both people lived during the same time period.
How to Assess It
- Read short biographies of Sam Houston and George Washington. Ask students to draw or write one similarity and one difference between their lives.

Ways to Teach It
Place two hoops on the floor and sort picture and fact cards about Sam Houston and George Washington into a Venn diagram.
Ask, “How were these two leaders alike and different?” and have students answer using “Both” and “but.”
Play a fact-match game where students pair each action, place, or event card with the correct historical figure.
Find a local street, school, or building named for a historical figure, then discuss why the community may have chosen that name.
