What Students Need to Do
- Students name each historical figure and tell one contribution the person made. They connect Sam Houston to Texas and the other leaders to changes across the nation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly match each figure with a portrait, contribution, and place in history. They explain in simple words how each person helped Texas or the United States.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse Sam Houston with George Washington because both were military leaders and presidents. They may think Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. lived at the same time or that King was a president.
How to Assess It
- Give students four portraits and four contribution cards to match. Ask them to choose one figure and complete, "_____ helped by _____."

Ask students to write or discuss, "Which person made a change that still affects people today, and how?"
Play Who Am I by reading contribution clues while students hold up the matching figure card.
