What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students mark one choice on a simple ballot and place it in a ballot box. They count the ballots, identify the result, and accept the group’s choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can cast one vote without changing another person’s ballot. The student can explain how the votes determine the winning choice and respond respectfully if another option wins.

Common Misconceptions

Students may vote more than once or think louder voices should decide. Some expect their choice to win because they selected it. Others may confuse voting with taking turns or reaching full agreement.

How to Assess It

Give students a ballot with two choices for a class brain break. Ask each student to vote once, identify the winner from the tally, and explain why it won.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Hold a secret ballot between two class read-alouds, then let students sort, count, and announce the winning choice.

  2. Discuss why each person gets one vote and how classmates should respond when their choice does not win.

  3. Play Vote or Not by naming class decisions, then have students show thumbs-up when voting would be a fair way to decide.

  4. View a sample local election ballot and circle features also used in the class vote, including choices, selection marks, and totals.
