What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify several scientists and engineers and describe the work they did. They connect Isaac Newton with studying light and motion, Mae Jemison with space science, and Ynes Mexia with plants.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name each person from a photo and share one accurate fact about that person's work. They can explain that scientists study questions and engineers design solutions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all scientists wear lab coats or that engineers only drive trains. They may also think science and engineering jobs are only for men.
How to Assess It
- Give students picture cards of Newton, Jemison, and Mexia. Ask them to match each person to light, space, or plants and explain one match.

Ways to Teach It
Set out a prism, leaves, and blocks for students to investigate light, sort plants, build a spacecraft model, and name the related person.
Show photos of the three people and ask, "How was each person's work different, and what did they have in common?"
Play a card matching game using each person's photo, name, tools, and area of study.
Walk through the school and list things an engineer designed and living things a scientist could study.
