What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match well-known scientists and inventors to the work they did. They describe how people study the natural world, create tools, test ideas, and solve problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name Alexander Graham Bell, Marie Daly, Mario Molina, and Jane Goodall and give one accurate detail about each person’s work. The student can also describe one difference between the work of a scientist and an engineer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all scientists work in laboratories or that engineers only fix engines. They may confuse discoveries with inventions. They may also mix up each person’s field or contribution.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with the four names and four work descriptions. Have students match them, then explain one match in a complete sentence.

Give pairs scientist profile cards and tool, discovery, or invention cards; have them match each person to their work and explain one match.
Ask, “How are Jane Goodall’s and Alexander Graham Bell’s jobs alike and different?” Students write two details.
Play “Who Am I?” by reading clues about each person’s tools, field, and work while students hold up the matching name card.
Tour the school to spot engineered solutions, such as ramps and faucets, then name the problem each design solves.
