What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a question or problem into a workable plan. They choose whether to observe, compare, test a variable, or build a solution, then identify materials, steps, data, and safety needs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose a suitable approach and explain why it fits the question. The plan includes repeatable steps, measurable data, fair conditions, and clear criteria for success.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every question requires a controlled experiment. They may change several variables at once or record opinions instead of measurements. Some build the first idea without setting criteria, testing it, or revising it.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Your class needs a cup sleeve that keeps ice water cold. Outline how you would investigate materials, collect data, and choose a design.”

Ways to Teach It
Give teams three paper towel brands, equal water samples, and balances to plan and run a fair absorbency test.
Ask students to explain in writing when observing bird behavior would be better than running an experiment.
Have pairs sort scenario cards into observation, comparison, variable test, or engineering design, then defend one choice.
Students audit one day of cafeteria trash, identify a problem, and sketch a bin label system with measurable success criteria.
