What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a focused question, plan repeatable steps, choose tools, and record observations or measurements. They also define a problem, design a solution, test it, and improve it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can write a clear plan that another group could follow and create a useful data table. They can explain how test results led to a design change.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every investigation must change a variable or prove a prediction. They may treat the first design as final or see a failed test as a failed project. They may also confuse gathering evidence with building a solution.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with two tasks: plan how to compare soil moisture in two locations, then sketch and label a tool that keeps rain off the soil.

Ways to Teach It
Teams measure puddle depth and width at three marked spots, record the data, and write a descriptive claim.
Ask students to explain how investigating a problem differs from designing a solution to it.
Use plan cards with missing steps, tools, or data tables, and have pairs identify and fix each gap.
Students design, test, and revise a paper shade structure that keeps an ice cube from melting for ten minutes.
