What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a question or problem into a workable plan. They select an investigation type, identify variables, collect useful data, and follow safe, repeatable steps. For design problems, they define criteria and constraints, test a solution, and revise it using evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can choose whether to describe, compare, or test cause and effect. Their plans name materials, measurements, variables, safety steps, and a clear procedure. They use results to support conclusions or improve a design.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every investigation needs an independent variable or control group. They often confuse the measured variable with the changed variable or leave constants uncontrolled. They may accept the first design without testing it against criteria and constraints.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Design a cup sleeve that keeps water cold for 20 minutes.” Students state a testable question, identify variables and measurements, list three steps, and name one constraint.

Ways to Teach It
Have teams test how ramp height affects toy-car distance, using three heights, repeated trials, metersticks, and a shared data table.
Ask students to explain when they would describe a pond, compare two ponds, or test how fertilizer affects pond algae.
Give groups scenario cards to sort into descriptive, comparative, experimental, or engineering tasks, then require one sentence defending each choice.
Challenge teams to build a foil lunchbox liner, test ice melt after 15 minutes, and revise the design within a material limit.
