What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how research evidence can change scientific explanations and affect society. They trace the investigation process, weigh costs and benefits, and identify contributions from scientists with varied backgrounds.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a case study, students can identify the question, evidence, conclusions, and later revisions. They can support a cost-benefit judgment and connect specific scientists to the work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat scientific explanations as fixed facts or assume one famous scientist made a discovery alone. They may count only financial costs or mistake social popularity for scientific validity.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket asking: “How did one study from today’s lesson change scientific thinking or society, and what was one benefit and one cost?”
