What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how evidence from past and current research changed a scientific explanation and affected society. They describe how the research was conducted, weigh costs against benefits, and identify contributions from scientists with varied backgrounds.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect a research finding to a change in scientific thinking and a specific effect on people. The student uses evidence to compare costs and benefits and explains how more than one scientist contributed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat science as one fixed set of steps or assume a single famous scientist made each discovery alone. They may list costs and benefits without comparing them or confuse public opinion with scientific evidence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Explain how antibiotic research changed scientific thinking and society, then name one benefit, one cost, and one scientist's contribution.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups research milestone cards about plate tectonics to sequence, then have them label new evidence, changed ideas, and effects on society.
Ask students to write: Should society fund research when benefits are uncertain and costs are high? Support the answer with two details.
