What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how a research finding changed an explanation, later investigations, or public decisions. They identify parts of the scientific process, weigh costs and benefits, and explain how scientists from different backgrounds contributed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a case study to identify the question, evidence, and change in scientific thinking. They can explain one social benefit, one cost or risk, and each featured scientist's specific contribution.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat science as a straight path from experiment to fact. They may assume research has only positive effects or that costs are only financial. They may credit one famous scientist while overlooking collaborators and earlier work.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Using today's ozone case, explain how one piece of evidence changed scientific thinking, name one scientist's contribution, and list one benefit and one cost.
