What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain scientific findings and proposed solutions using clear claims, evidence, and reasoning. They communicate through writing, speaking, diagrams, tables, or digital presentations, both alone and with a group.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose a format that fits the audience and clearly connect evidence to an explanation or solution. In group work, the student contributes ideas, listens, and helps create a consistent final message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list data without explaining what it shows. They may recommend a solution based on opinion rather than evidence, criteria, and tradeoffs. Some think collaboration means one person completes the work while others agree.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs a simple data graph. Each student writes a three-sentence explanation, then the pair gives a 30-second shared explanation using evidence from the graph.

Ways to Teach It
Teams test foil boat designs, then present a labeled diagram, results table, and spoken explanation of their best solution.
Students write which of two explanations is better supported, cite evidence, then compare reasoning with a partner.
Run a format-switch relay where teams turn one finding into a graph caption, lab note, diagram, and 30-second briefing.
Give students campus water-use data and have teams write a recommendation to the principal, including evidence, tradeoffs, and a simple visual.
