What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create diagrams, physical builds, equations, or simulations that show how parts interact. They use the model to predict an outcome, compare it with evidence, and revise it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a model type that fits the question and labels key parts, inputs, outputs, and relationships. The student makes a testable prediction and explains one limitation of the model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a model as a decorative copy instead of a tool for explaining or predicting. They may include every detail, ignore scale, or assume one model can answer every question.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw particle models of air in a capped syringe before and after compression. They must predict what happens when released and explain their model.
