What Students Need to Do: Students create physical, drawn, or digital models that show how parts interact or how a process changes over time. They use the model to explain, predict, test, or improve an idea. They may also build and revise a prototype that solves a problem.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose a model type that fits the task and include accurate labels, parts, and relationships. They explain what the model shows and identify a limitation. When building a prototype, they use test results to make a useful change.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat a model as a decorated copy instead of a tool for explaining how something works. They may think models must be full size or perfectly realistic. Some change a prototype without using test evidence or clear criteria.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw a labeled model showing how water moves through a plant, using arrows and a two-sentence explanation. Have them name one limitation of their model.
