What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create diagrams, physical models, or computer models that show parts and their relationships. They use the model to explain observations, make predictions, or test a proposed design.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a model that fits the question and label its key parts. They explain what the model shows, use it to make a supported prediction, and name one limitation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a model as a smaller copy instead of a tool for explaining ideas. They may include decorative details, omit relationships, or assume one model can answer every question.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket asking students to draw air particles before and after compression in a sealed syringe. Have them predict what happens when released and explain how their model supports the prediction.

Ways to Teach It
Build a stream table with sand, water, and craft sticks, then use it to predict and test where sediment will collect.
Compare two food web models and write which model better explains how removing one organism affects the system.
Play Model Match by pairing phenomenon cards with diagram cards, then require each pair to defend one match.
Map lunchtime cafeteria traffic, model a new table arrangement, and predict how it could reduce crowded pathways.
