What Students Need to Do: Students choose suitable tools and SI units, take measurements, and record numbers with units. They also record specific observations about qualities such as color, texture, odor, or shape.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students produce an organized data table with accurate measurements, correct SI unit labels, and clear observations. They use both types of data to support a conclusion about an investigation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may record measurements without units or use customary units instead of SI units. They may treat opinions such as “looks nice” as observations or assume qualitative data is less useful.
How to Assess It: Give students a rock, ruler, and balance. Ask them to record two SI measurements, two qualitative observations, and one evidence-based comparison.

Lesson moves

Set up stations with water, rocks, and leaves, then have students collect SI measurements and precise observations using rulers, balances, and graduated cylinders.
Show two mystery powders and ask students to write which recorded measurements and observations would help identify each one.
Play Data Sort Relay, where teams classify cards as quantitative or qualitative, then correct missing units and vague observations.
Compare nutrition labels from two snacks, recording mass in grams, package features, and evidence for which product offers more food per serving.
