What Students Need to Do: Students choose suitable tools and record measurements with metric units, such as centimeters, grams, milliliters, and degrees Celsius. They also record clear observations about properties such as color, texture, shape, and odor.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students match each measurement to the correct tool and unit, then enter complete data in a labeled table. They use measured values and objective observations to support a claim.
Common Misconceptions: Students may record a number without a unit, confuse mass with volume, or choose a tool with the wrong scale. They may treat opinions such as “pretty” as observations or use vague words such as “big.”
How to Assess It: Give each student two classroom objects. Ask them to identify which is longer and support the claim with one metric measurement and one objective observation.

Lesson moves

Set up stations with rulers, balances, thermometers, and graduated cylinders for students to measure samples and record observable properties.
Ask students to revise “the plant looks healthy” into a claim supported by one measurement and two objective observations.
Play a matching relay where teams pair measurement cards with the correct SI unit, tool, and sample data.
Record outdoor temperature, rainfall, and cloud cover, then use the data to write a short school weather report.
