What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students select goggles, gloves, aprons, or other protection based on the hazard and wear each item correctly. They follow setup, handling, cleanup, disposal, and emergency routines without taking shortcuts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Before an investigation, a student identifies likely hazards and gathers the needed protection. During the work, the student handles materials safely and keeps the area orderly. If a spill, break, or unsafe action occurs, the student stops and alerts the teacher.

Common Misconceptions

Students may wear goggles on their forehead, assume gloves protect against every substance, or touch personal items with contaminated gloves. They may also smell chemicals directly or try to clean spills and broken glass without telling the teacher.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A test tube cracks while being heated. Write the first three actions you should take and name the safety equipment involved.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up mock lab stations where students identify each hazard, choose protective equipment, and demonstrate correct use.

  2. Show a lab scene with four safety errors, then ask students to write each correction and explain why it matters.

  3. Run a safety charades game where students act out a procedure while classmates name the safe action and its purpose.

  4. Compare photos of school lab equipment with equipment used by nurses, welders, and construction workers, then match each item to its hazard.
