What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and use the right protective equipment for each investigation. They follow safe routines for tools, materials, cleanup, emergencies, and fieldwork.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify hazards before starting and explain how each safety step lowers risk. They wear equipment correctly, follow procedures, and report spills, injuries, or unsafe behavior at once.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think goggles are needed only when chemicals are used, or that gloves replace handwashing. They may clean spills themselves, smell materials directly, or ignore field hazards such as heat, insects, and uneven ground.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture of a lab setup with five safety errors. Ask them to circle each error and write the safer action.

Ways to Teach It
Set up safety stations where students practice fitting goggles, using a fire blanket, washing hands, and reporting a simulated spill.
Ask students to write a response to: What should you do if your partner removes their goggles during an investigation?
Play Safety Scenario Sort using cards labeled safe, unsafe, or depends, then require students to justify each choice.
Have students create a safety checklist for testing water quality at a local pond, including weather, wildlife, clothing, and emergency plans.
