What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify hazards before an investigation and choose the correct protective equipment. They follow directions, handle materials safely, and report spills, injuries, or damaged equipment immediately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student wears and uses protective equipment correctly without reminders. The student keeps the work area safe, follows disposal rules, and responds properly when a problem occurs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think goggles are optional when materials seem harmless or that regular glasses give enough protection. They may clean up spills or broken glass themselves instead of alerting the teacher.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture of an unsafe lab station. Ask them to circle three hazards and write the safe action for each one.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a mock lab with staged hazards, then have pairs select protective equipment and correct each unsafe condition.
Ask students to write their first three actions after noticing a chemical spill beside a classmate.
Play a hazard card sort where teams match situations with safe actions, protective equipment, and disposal methods.
Show photos of laboratory, construction, and medical workers, then have students label the protective equipment used for each job.
