What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort observable body features by how they arise. They explain that some features pass from parents, while others develop through injury, use, or the environment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can classify examples such as natural eye color, a scar, leaf shape, and enlarged muscles. The student gives a clear reason and does not confuse learned behaviors with body features.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any family resemblance is inherited, including hairstyle or pierced ears. They may label learned behaviors as physical traits or assume scars and calluses pass to offspring.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Label each feature inherited or acquired: a dog's coat color, a cut scar, a cactus's spines, and a runner's calluses. Explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs organism photo cards to sort into inherited and acquired groups, then have them attach a sticky note explaining each choice.
Write a claim answering: If a mouse loses part of its tail, will its offspring have shorter tails? Support the claim with reasoning.
Play Trait Sort Relay, where teams place feature cards under inherited or acquired labels and earn a point for each correct explanation.
Complete a mock veterinary chart that identifies a dog's coat pattern, ear shape, scar, and worn claws as inherited or acquired.
