What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify plant features and describe the job each one performs. They connect each feature to an environmental challenge, such as limited water, strong sunlight, or flooding.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a plant and its habitat, students explain how a specific feature supports survival. They make clear links, such as a coated leaf slowing water loss or long roots reaching underground water.

Common Misconceptions

Students may say a feature helps a plant without explaining how. They may think coated leaves collect water rather than reduce water loss. Some think an individual plant develops a new feature simply because it needs one.

How to Assess It

Show a desert plant with coated leaves and long roots. Ask, “How does each feature help this plant survive where water is scarce?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cover one damp sponge with wax paper, leave another uncovered, and compare mass after an hour to model water loss from leaves.

  2. Ask students to write: Which would help more in a dry habitat, broad thin leaves or coated leaves, and why?

  3. Play a card sort matching plant features, jobs, and habitats, then require partners to defend two matches.

  4. Walk the schoolyard, sketch two plants, and infer how one visible feature helps each plant handle local conditions.
