What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify visible animal body parts and describe the job each part does. They connect that job to finding food, moving, staying safe, or handling habitat conditions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can examine an unfamiliar animal, point to an external feature, and make a reasonable claim about how it helps. The student supports the claim with evidence from the animal’s habitat or behavior.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a body part without explaining its job. They may confuse external structures with behaviors or assume every feature has only one use. Some think survival only means escaping predators.
How to Assess It
- Show a photo of a snowshoe hare and ask, "Choose one visible body part. How does it help the hare survive where it lives?" Require a labeled arrow and one evidence sentence.
