What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify features of environments, such as water, soil, sunlight, temperature, and shelter. They explain how rainfall affects the plants that grow and the animals that find food, water, and shelter there.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare a dry environment with a rainy one and predict which organisms could live in each. They support each prediction with a clear link between rainfall, plant growth, and animal needs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all plants and animals need the same amount of rain. They may overlook how rainfall affects animals indirectly by changing their food and shelter. They may also confuse one rainy day with an environment's usual conditions.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a desert and a rainforest. Ask students to name one plant or animal suited to each and explain how rainfall supports it.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sand, soil, leaves, rocks, and animal figures to build wet and dry habitat models, then explain each placement.
Show a cactus and a fern, then ask students to write which environment fits each plant and why.
