What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify every possible result of one-step and multi-step chance situations. They organize results in an orderly list or branching diagram without missing or repeating outcomes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a chance situation, students create a complete organized list or branching diagram. They include each possible outcome once and explain how each branch represents a choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave out outcomes, repeat outcomes, or pair choices inconsistently. They may also treat a two-step event as two separate lists instead of showing every possible combination.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A coin is flipped and a spinner labeled A, B, C is spun. Show all outcomes with a tree diagram and an organized list.

Ways to Teach It
In pairs, students flip a coin and roll a die, record results, then build a tree showing every possible outcome.
Ask students to explain in writing how they know a sample space is complete and has no repeated outcomes.
Play Sample Space Relay, where teams complete lists and tree diagrams for cards showing different two-step experiments.
Give students a café menu with drink and snack choices, then have them list every possible order.
