What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students move between fraction, decimal, and percent forms while solving situations such as discounts, tips, and amounts of money. They show that each form represents the same part of a whole.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can show that $15 out of $60 is 1/4, 0.25, and 25 percent. The student simplifies the fraction and explains why all three values name the same amount.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat 0.4 as 4 percent instead of 40 percent. They may also use the dollar amount as the denominator instead of the original price.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: “A backpack costs $40, and the discount is $10. Write the discount as a fraction of the price, a decimal, and a percent.”
