What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort numbers into nested groups for whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers. They use a Venn diagram to show that one number can belong to more than one group.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly place whole numbers inside integers and integers inside rational numbers. They classify fractions, decimals, negative integers, and zero, including all sets each number belongs to.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a number belongs to only one set. They may exclude negative integers or zero from the rational numbers. Some also confuse rational numbers with positive fractions only.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with 0, -4, 2/3, and 5. Students place each number in a nested Venn diagram and explain one placement.

Ways to Teach It
Place labeled hoops inside one another, then have students sort number cards such as 0, -6, 3/4, 8, and 1.2.
Ask students to explain why 5 belongs to three sets but -5 belongs to only two of the named sets.
Play a card sort race where teams place number cards on nested set mats and earn a point for each correct explanation.
Use temperatures, bank balances, recipe amounts, and item counts, then have students classify each value into every matching number set.
