What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students classify numbers as natural, whole, integers, rational, irrational, or real. They use nested diagrams to show which groups contain other groups and where each number belongs.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a mixed list, students place each value in every group that applies. They can explain why -3 is an integer, rational, and real, while √2 is irrational and real.

Common Misconceptions

Students often place a number in only the smallest group and forget that it also belongs to larger groups. They may call terminating or repeating decimals irrational, or assume every square root is irrational.

How to Assess It

Give students the numbers -4, 0, 2.5, 1/3, √9, and √7. Have them place each number on a nested set diagram and justify one placement.
