What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place integers, fractions, and decimals, including negative values, at the correct points on a number line. They use position to compare values and arrange them from least to greatest or greatest to least.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place positive and negative fractions, decimals, and integers accurately on a number line. They order mixed sets correctly and explain that values farther right are greater.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think -8 is greater than -3 because 8 is greater than 3. They may also compare fractions and decimals by their digits instead of placing equivalent values at the same point.
How to Assess It
- Give students -2.5, 1/2, -3, 0.75, and -1/4. Have them plot each value, order them from least to greatest, and write one comparison using < or >.
