What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how credit reports help people review their borrowing history, find errors, and notice possible identity theft. They also explain how lenders use reports when making loan decisions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how a borrower uses a report to check accuracy, spot fraud, and prepare to apply for credit. They can explain how lenders use it to judge repayment risk.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a credit report and a credit score are the same thing. They may also think checking their own report lowers their score or that income appears on the report.

How to Assess It

Give students a mock credit report. Ask them to name one way it helps a borrower and one way it helps a lender.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a mock credit report and sticky notes to mark details useful to a borrower, a lender, or both.

  2. Ask students to write: Why should someone review a credit report before applying for a car loan?

  3. Play a sorting game with cards showing report details, placing each under payment history, debt, account history, or personal information.

  4. Compare two fictional loan applicants and have students decide what added information a lender would seek before approving either loan. Dan bankruptcy
